Yesterday's 'Super 8' star is today's Tom Sawyer

Joel Joel Courtney just wanted to come to L.A. to take some acting classes and maybe wind up in a commercial. One supersecret casting process later, he was the runaway star of J.J. Abrams' "Super 8," and now he'll play one of the most iconic characters in American fiction, Variety's Jeff Sneider exclusively reports. Courtney will play Tom Sawyer in “Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn,” and is also in negotiations for supernatural indie "The Healer." Mark Twain's classic will be screenwritten and directed by Jo Kastner, and is scheduled to shoot this August in Bulgaria (sorry, Missouri, but we guess those tax credits just weren't up to snuff). In "The Healer," he'll play a resentful teen whose father takes his sons into the woods to bond, but they encounter a sinister supernatural force.
