HESS ADOPTS 'THE PET'

HessEXCLUSIVE: Disney and producer Scott Rudin are getting an old pet project back up and running, tapping NAPOLEON DYNAMITE director Jared Hess to helm its long-gestating sci-fi family comedy THE PET,Variety's Stuart Oldham reports. Rudin — who split from Disney last year to join Sony — is producing the live-action pic alongside Craig Perry and Sheila Taylor Hanahan. Based on an original idea from Matt Lieberman (SHORT CIRCUIT), THE PET centers on a man who’s abducted by aliens, taken to their planet and turned into a family pet. Rudin originally boarded THE PET at Disney in 2007 while still under contract with Miramax. But he left the project behind when he ankled Disney for Sony last year — in large part because the Mouse House had sold Miramax and focused on family-friendly films, leaving Rudin’s adult-skewing projects without a natural home. THE PET, however, is right up Disney's doggie door.
